Living at home for as long as you can to save money, but when you are ready to go, before you sign a lease, shove your everything into packing boxes and shut the door behind you, be clear on how you will benefit from moving out of home.

Having an idea of what you want will help you find what you need to live well.

What are the benefits of moving out?

Make a list of the reasons you want to leave and the benefits of moving out. You don’t want to pay to live somewhere else just to encounter the same problems and no benefits. The list will help you develop your selection criteria for when you start hunting for a rental.

  • You can build a better relationship with your family;
  • You can live with like-minded people;
  • You can eat whatever you want whenever you want;
  • You can do things for yourself, the way you like it;
  • You can spend your money without feeling judged; and/or
  • You can make mistakes and fix them yourself.

    Make a simple WHY statement

    Next step is to make a simple WHY statement that reflects the main reasons and benefits of moving out. Keep it simple. You might have a whole list of reasons for wanting to move out, focus on the biggest benefit for you so you can focus on your end goal instead of obstacles.

    A simple statement could look something like: I want to move out of home so that I spend less time travelling to work and I can invite my friends over when I want.

    This example is focusing on two key things that are important to you – time and your own space. Look for a place that is closer to work / better access to public transport, and find a house / flat with space where you can chill out with friends.
