Start Some Good Habits & Routines

START SOME GOOD HABIT AND ROUTINES

Moving out of home will inevitably mean you need to change or tweak a few of your routines. It’s the perfect time to start some good habits so things like making sure you eat well, doing the laundry or preparing for the work week just become something you do rather than a chore to put off.

Start with things you know you have to do throughout the year:

Daily

  • Make your bed every morning. Treat your room like your sanctuary. How good is it coming home after a long day and slipping into a made bed;
  • Put your clothes away when you get home. Be kind to your future self. Spending 20 minutes trying to find the perfect t-shirt under various piles of clothes is not going to bring you joy;
  • Plan your meals. You don’t have to go crazy doing big meal preps on a Sunday. Just jot down some ideas for the week that are easy to cook so you don’t have to think about after work when you tired.
  • Clean as you cook. Before you start cooking, fill up the sink with hot soapy water so you can wash up as you go. Then you can sit down, enjoy your meal and only have one or two things to clean;
  • Put the dishes away. One of the biggest issues in share houses is having someone else’s dishes taking up sink space. Just do it. (Also think about cockroaches crawling over the dishes a night – gross).
  • Exercise. Go for a walk for at least 20 minutes daily at a minimum.

Weekly

  • Wash your clothes. Your laundry should take less than an hour to sort, wash and hang on the line. Use the time you are waiting for the cycle to finish to do a couple of things on your cleaning list, like clean the bathroom, sweep cobwebs.
  • Other Laundry. Wash Pillowcases, towels and tea towels weekly.
  • Fill up the car with petrol. Wednesday afternoon/night are generally the best times to get a good price, clean your windscreen whilst your at the petrol station.
  • Take out the bins. The night BEFORE bin collection day.

Fortnightly

  • Wash your sheets. Wash them more frequently if you are a sweaty sleeper or have company over…

Monthly

  • Mini Car Service. (Check Oil, Water, Tyre Presser etc.);
  • Mini Facial, Mani / Pedicure at home. Keep your face, hands and feet looking good all year long.
  • Clean out the fridge. The best time to clean the fridge is before you do a big shop. Take everything out, and wipe down the shelves, doors, seals and fruit & veggie crisper with warm soapy water.

Every six weeks

  • Rent Inspection. The dreaded, unavoidable rent inspections.
  • Grooming. Get regular hair cuts at least every 6 weeks. A good trims freshens your look and can boost your mood.

Twice a year

  • Car serviced. Ask the mechanic if there is anything that needs replacing in the near future, so you can adjust your budget.
  • Dentist. Go for a clean and a checkup – keep your pearly whites sparkling.

Yearly

  • Tax. If you’re lucky – you might get some money back from the taxman. Don’t put off doing your tax, the ATO will notice, especially if you owe money.
  • Revisit your simple budget.
  • Plan a holiday. Start planning your holiday for next year so you have something to look forward to. Having a trip planned can make the year go quicker. Make the most out of your annual leave in 2021.

Starting some good habits and routines will help you feel (and look) more in control of your life.
